Stephen is Going to be Mad!

By: Beth Quinney

One of my favorite things to do on a Monday morning was to talk to Stephen and hear about any rescues he might have had over the weekend. As many have said, he was a great storyteller, so he could make a dull rescue sound exciting. One weekend, I was one of those dumb hikers. I am not a hiker, but I decided to push myself one day while walking on a trail. While going up the trail, there were plenty of people, but coming down, most of those people were gone. Before long, I was lost and had no clue where I was. As I sat on a rock to decide what to do, I thought, "Stephen is going to be mad if he has to come to find me." A friendly family found me before I had to make the call. When I told Stephen what had happened, he said, "You were in Davis County, so I wouldn't have been the one to come." I also got a little lecture about my stupidity.

Stephen was also a friend that was supportive in both my work and personal life. I have a nephew who, in November 2019, was placed on the transplant list. Bryson needed a new heart. Stephen would listen to my worries and fears and answer my questions. My nephew received his new heart on March 5th, 2020. That miracle happened because someone like Stephen and his family chose to donate. When I celebrate Bryson's donor, I will also celebrate Stephen. Thank you, my friend, for "rescuing" more people before you left your family and friends.
