That’s Steve with a PH

By Kirk Hughs

It was my pleasure to work with Stephe at the University of hospital for a few years. Stephe was always great for a laugh. I would round on the clinics and always plan on stopping by to have a laugh about some thing with him. Work would not be going well and frustrations would be mounting and we could always share a laugh together to get through it. And because Stephe was very serious at times, I used to like to push his buttons to get him to relax. I would tease him about being a male nurse sometimes referring to him as Nurse Smith in his women’s s-meduim scrub top. When he got excited about sharing an idea and would just be firing words out of his mouth as fast as they would come, I would remind him, “Stephe…BREATHE!” My favorite joke with him was in all emails or messages I would remind him that his name actually does not have a V and it is Stephe with a PH. So I always wrote his name as STEPHE. Some people even asked me about it and I tried to convince them of it. In my phone today, he is still Stephe Smith. I know he adored his wife and daughters because how he spoke about them always. He wanted the best for them. And that love he has for his family continues still.
